Remediation Strategies were retained by a leading UK Demolition Group to assist with the delineation of contamination associated with a former Strategic Fuel Depot in Southern England. The 6 Hectare site contained 4 No Bulk Fuel Installations for the storage of aviation fuel, with associated distribution and filling infrastructure.

The works were required to provide data for a Detailed Quantitative Risk Assessment (DQRA) and to assist in the design of the Remediation Strategy for the site. Redevelopment proposals for the site included residential housing with gardens, public open space and an area designated for flood alleviation.

Work Scope

Following on from the initial site investigation phase, additional contamination delineation works were commissioned to identify the nature and extent of the soil and groundwater contamination at the site and to provide site specific data for DQRA.

Works included the following elements:

• Trial pitting, soil sampling and analyses across the entire site area to provide a comprehensive validation dataset;
• Installation of additional boreholes and groundwater monitoring wells, with associated monitoring, sampling and analyses, to accurately delineate the extent of groundwater contamination and to provide site specific hydrogeological data for the DQRA;
• Deep trench excavation in close proximity of the fuel tanks to confirm tank construction and to establish whether any contamination is present at the base; and
• Investigation works down gradient of the tank farm to establish the effectiveness of remediation works previously carried out at the site.

Summary

Remediation Strategies assisted the development of the project by following on from previous site investigation works and providing a dataset of sufficient detail to allow a DQRA and a Remediation Strategy to be prepared for the site.
